Introduced a Comprehensive Swift Design System
Today I shipped a fully integrated design system for PantryAI’s iOS app, including core components like buttons, cards, chips, sheets, and text fields, all built with consistent tokens for colors, typography, and spacing. This replaces numerous legacy UI components and utilities, simplifying maintenance and ensuring a unified look and feel across the app.
Standardized UI Components Across the App
With the new design system in place, I refactored most UI components to use the standardized design tokens for spacing, typography, and shadows. This includes major views in authentication, recipes, groceries, dashboard, onboarding, and settings, which now all follow the same design language. This work also involved removing many old extensions and utilities that are no longer needed.
Added Design System Documentation and Mockups
I documented the design system in detail with a new markdown file and added HTML mockups to help visualize component usage and guide future development. This documentation will serve as a single source of truth for the UI design and development team moving forward.
Firebase Integration and Backend Improvements
Alongside the UI updates, I configured Firebase for the landing page and backend, adding Firestore indexes, rules, and migration scripts to support scalability. I also upgraded Firebase Cloud Functions to the latest syntax and added new scheduled tasks and triggers to improve analytics rollups and data consistency.
Admin Dashboard Enhancements
Built a new onboarding insights dashboard for admins featuring custom components like breakdown charts, funnel charts, and filter bars. This dashboard provides better visibility into user onboarding metrics and engagement trends, supporting data-driven decisions.
Image-Based Recipe Extraction Feature
Implemented a new backend service to extract recipe data from images, enhancing the recipe import experience. The iOS recipe editing UI was also improved with updated architecture guidelines to support this feature smoothly.
Other improvements
- Added Firestore scalability redesign documentation with a detailed implementation plan to support millions of users.
- Optimized data manager queries for recipes, groceries, and activity logs to reduce Firestore costs.
- Sanitized Firestore field paths to avoid issues with category names.
- Updated localization strings and cleaned up unused resources.
