I built a Loom alternative because Atlassian broke everything
A year ago I was a Loom user like everyone else.
Then Atlassian acquired them. Then the bills doubled. Then the crashes started. Then I checked Trustpilot and saw 1.5 stars with 70% one-star reviews — people furious
about billing spikes, videos stuck uploading, support that never responds.
The kicker: some teams went from $240/year to $24,000/year overnight. Same product. Just a new owner.
I kept waiting for a good alternative to show up. Nothing did. So I built one.
Introducing Portell — free screen recorder, share in seconds.
The idea is simple: open a browser tab, record your screen and camera, get a shareable link. No desktop app. No extension. No install. Just record and share.
I wanted it to solve the exact things people were complaining about with Loom:
- Reliability — it just works, every time
- Pricing — $9/mo flat, no per-seat fees, viewers are always free
- Simplicity — three clicks and you're done
